About Treatment
This is an injection of numbing medicine. It bathes the medial branch nerves, which attach to the facet joints of your spine. These nerves hurt when facet joints are injured or diseased. The injection helps find the source of your pain. And it may relieve your pain for a brief time.
Preparation
To begin, your doctor injects local anesthetic. This numbs your skin and tissue around the areas to be injected.
Inserting the needle
Next, your doctor guides a thin needle through the numbed tissue. A video x-ray device called a
“fluoroscope” helps find your medial branch nerves. Contrast dye is injected to make sure the needle is in the right place.
Injection
Then, the doctor injects numbing medicine onto the nerves. The medicine temporarily numbs the nerves. If this area is the source of your pain, you’ll feel immediate pain relief. More than one level of the spine may need to be injected.
End of procedure
When the procedure is finished, you’ll be watched for a brief time. Then you can go home. You may feel pain relief for the next few hours. You may be asked to keep track of your pain level as the medicine wears off. If the block was successful, your doctor can recommend a procedure to provide long-lasting relief.
Dr. Lovett and her staff are wonderful at taking care of their patients. They listen to you and are are so kind and understanding. Her office went out of their way to get me in when I needed to be seen before a big trip that I had planned. I cannot say enough about how professional and personal they were to me. She spends time with you and listens carefully to what you explain about your pain. Her trigger point injections are dead on. She genuinely cares about her patients. She does not over medicate, but she does prescribe medications that actually work together. She also does nerve burns and steroid injections. I have gotten a lot of relief.
Dr. Lovett is one of the kindest, most caring doctors that I have ever encountered. Her staff is terrific and their empathy for people who deal with chronic pain makes it so much easier to deal with. She is an answer to prayer!
Dr. Lovett was listening 100% as we went through establishing my history. She asked great questions and provided the reasoning for medications prescribed. She also ordered an MRI, which no physician has done since my hip replacement revision in 2014. It made sense to me since I have chronic pain and cannot walk without support (cane or walked). I am feeling hopeful for the first time in a long while.
Dr. Lovett and her staff are amazing. Have never met a nicer group of staff to help with anything you need, and Dr. Lovett, she’s a wonderful person. Whether your up or down she’ll make you feel better. And as patients, sometimes we need to listen to our Doctors. They have their ups and downs like every human being.
