About Treatment
This injection, generally performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia, relieves low back and leg pain most often caused by scarring from a prior back surgery. The procedure is performed with the patient lying face down with a cushion placed under the stomach.
Anesthetic Injected
The physician locates the small opening at the base of the sacrum (called the sacral hiatus) and injects a local anesthetic that numbs the skin and all the tissue down to the surface of the sacral hiatus.
Needle Inserted
The physician then guides the needle through the anesthetized track and into the epidural space.
Contrast Solution Injected
A contrast solution is injected, allowing the physician to see the scarred and painful areas on an X-ray device called a fluoroscope.
Catheter Inserted
A small, flexible catheter is fed through the needle and positioned at the location of scarring.
Medication Injected
A steroid-anesthetics mix is injected through the catheter and around the scarring, bathing the painful area in medication and dissolving the scar tissue.
End of Procedure
The needle and catheter are removed. In some cases, it may be necessary to keep the catheter in place to allow for more injections over the next few days. It also may be necessary to repeat the procedure a few months later to reduce scar tissue further.
Dr. Lovett and her staff are wonderful at taking care of their patients. They listen to you and are are so kind and understanding. Her office went out of their way to get me in when I needed to be seen before a big trip that I had planned. I cannot say enough about how professional and personal they were to me. I highly recommend Dr. Lovett.
She spends time with you and listens carefully to what you explain about your pain. Her trigger point injections are dead on. She genuinely cares about her patients. She does not over medicate, but she does prescribe medications that actually work together. She also does nerve burns and steroid injections. I have gotten a lot of relief.
Dr. Lovett is one of the kindest, most caring doctors that I have ever encountered. Her staff is terrific and their empathy for people who deal with chronic pain makes it so much easier to deal with. She is an answer to prayer!
Dr. Lovett was listening 100% as we went through establishing my history. She asked great questions and provided the reasoning for medications prescribed. She also ordered an MRI, which no physician has done since my hip replacement revision in 2014. It made sense to me since I have chronic pain and cannot walk without support (cane or walked). I am feeling hopeful for the first time in a long while.
Dr. Lovett and her staff are amazing. Have never met a nicer group of staff to help with anything you need, and Dr. Lovett, she’s a wonderful person. Whether your up or down she’ll make you feel better. And as patients, sometimes we need to listen to our Doctors. They have their ups and downs like every human being.
Be nice to your doctors and staff!!! 💜💙💚
Dr. Lovett is the most compassionate pain doctor I’ve ever known. She truly cares about her patients and does everything she can to help you feel better. Her bedside manner is outstanding and far exceeds most doctors today.
I absolutely love Dr Lovett. She is so caring and truly loves her patients. She has helped me so much. I told her that I had wished God had put her in my life a long time ago during my difficult times with my pain.
Professional, confident, outstanding bedside manner. Never feel like I’m been rushed through appointments. Listens and explains your options. I’ve been a patient of hers for at least a decade and have never had a complaint. Grateful to have her as my Doctor.
Dr. Lovett is a warm and compassionate doctor. If you go to her, you will never want to change!
She was very courteous and great listener and give me all the time I needed to explain my issues and the whole staff was very friendly and helpful in every way. It was the best first doctor visit I have ever had anywhere.
Very good Dr. She listens and takes her time with you. If you need additional tests she will order those. The office has gotten me in before my appointments if I have a problem. The staff is great and I feel at home there.
Dr. Lovett was very caring in talking with me when I underwent a Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injection, and answered all my questions clearly. I would highly recommend her to anyone needing pain management.
